Closets, Past and Future

Posted by: Storganization Staff Tags: Organization, Sweepstakes

If you’ve ever been in a house that’s more than a century old, you probably noticed the bedroom closets were small or non-existent. Our not-too-distant ancestors primarily used armoires, chests or drawers or wall pegs to store their clothing, which usually consisted of only a few items.

In the late 1800s, newly built American residences began to include dedicated storage space for clothing. And walk-in closets started to show up in suburban homes by the middle of the 20th Century.

Most early 20th Century closets were of modest size, unlike this one.

ClosetMaid Opens Its Doors

Fifty-five years ago, Florida-based ClosetMaid saw a need for closet shelving that allowed clothing to breathe in the South’s humid climate and developed the first ventilated wire shelving. After a decade of selling our products to tradespeople, we partnered with Ace Hardware to sell directly to the consumer.

Since then, we’ve expanded our product offerings to include other organizational items, such as storage furniture, fabric drawers and wood shelving, and we offer these pieces on our own website and through a variety of online and in-store retailer partners.

We also added luxury wood closet systems to meet our customers’ requests. These include the professionally installed MasterSuite, along with DIY SpaceCreations and SuiteSymphony.

We’re Still Innovating

ClosetMaid is committed to continuing to be pioneers in the storage products industry, whether by making our products more environmentally friendly or more consumer friendly.

For example, in 2010, we received recognition for offering the first closet system to earn an SCS Recycled Content Certification.

As we celebrate our 55th anniversary in 2020, our new product development keeps going. Our latest product, ShelfTrack EVO, is an evolution of our popular adjustable ShelfTrack system and features melamine shelving and quick-install accessories — like drawers and an angled shoe rack.

And we’re not done innovating yet. Our new tech-centric office will be an inspiring workspace for our engineers and product developers, so stay tuned to see what they come up with next!

In honor of our anniversary, we’ve giving away a SuiteSymphony 25-inch starter kit to five winners. Winners can choose from Pure White, Espresso and Natural Gray. The sweepstakes runs from February 20 to March 5, 2020. Enter for your chance to win.
